Due to wars, terrorism, political and economic crises, mass migrant movements affecting Croatia as well, there was a need for a flexible educational framework capable of accomodating for all children seeking international protection as fast as possible.
The goal of the project "Building local and national capacities for the educational integration of children seeking international protection and migrant children” was to support kindergartens, schools and other educational professionals in building a more flexible system suitable for migrant children. The programme involved seven educational institutions including kindergartens and schools. It included professionals from six schools, three kindergartens, representatives of municipal authorities, social welfare and health professionals, CSO representatives and others.
The project implementation included intersectoral meetings which gathered representatives of the educational institutions and other institutions involved in the educational integration of migrant children as well as the representatives of the relevant Ministries and municipalities. The purpose of the meetings was to exchange experiences, discuss about the challenges they deal with in the education and integration of migrant children, and to develop policy recommendations.
Education professionals participated in a number of workshops aimed at implementing a socially just education and developing competences to teach second language learners. A "Self-evaluation tool for assessing social inclusion of schools and kindergartens who are involved in the integration of migrant children" was developed, while school and kindergarten expert teams participated in the training course for building socially inclusive kindergartens and schools.
During the project the "Article 28" web site was launched, aimed to empower schools and kindergartens including or planning to include migrant children in their programmes. It is tailored to help these institutions respond to the emerging educational needs in the best interest of the children, continuously improving their own capacities and skills.
